A Visa® Prepaid Card can be permanently closed from your online dashboard at any time. Closing a Card is permanent, so before you start, it's worth making sure closing is the right step and deciding what should happen to any money left on the Card.
In this article, you'll learn what happens to a remaining balance, how to close a Card, and a few alternatives that may fit better.
Before you begin
- You'll need full access. Only users with full access can close a Card. If you have read-only access, please ask a user with full access on your account to complete these steps.
- Remaining funds can't go back to the savings account. Once money has been deposited onto the Card, we're unable to transfer it back to your ABLE or 529 savings account. If there's a balance left when you close the Card, True Link will return it to you by check, at no cost. You can spend the funds or deposit them back into your savings account. For questions about depositing a check into your savings account, please contact Vestwell (click College Savings (529) or ABLE at the top of the page to find your plan).
- Prefer to move the balance to another Card? If you have another Card tied to the same savings account (for example, a Card used by the beneficiary and a Card used by the Authorized Legal Representative (ALR) or Account Owner for the same ABLE account), we can move the remaining balance to that Card instead. Please contact our Customer Support team before you close the Card. See Transfer Funds Between Cards.
- Check for withdrawals still on the way. True Link can't see withdrawals scheduled in the Vestwell platform. Before you close the Card, please check your Vestwell account to make sure no withdrawals to this Card are still in progress, and cancel any that you no longer need. For help with a Vestwell withdrawal, please contact Vestwell.
- Closing several Cards at once? If you manage many cardholders and would like to close Cards in bulk, please contact our Customer Support team, and we'll be glad to help.
Is closing the right step?
Depending on your situation, one of these options may fit better than closing the Card:
- The Card is lost or stolen. Temporarily deactivate the Card and order a replacement instead. See Temporarily Deactivate and Replace a Lost or Stolen Card.
- You'd like to pause the Card for a while. A temporarily deactivated Card stops new purchases and can be reactivated at any time. See How to Temporarily Deactivate a Card.
- You've spotted a transaction you don't recognize. Contact our Customer Support team right away — we can help you review it and file a dispute. If the Card needs to be closed because of fraud, we'll take care of that with you as part of the same call or email. See Disputing Fraudulent Transactions or Merchant Errors.
How to close a Card
- Sign in to your dashboard. Each plan has its own sign-in page; you can find the link for your plan in ABLE Visa® Card - How to Log In Online.
- Open the cardholder's page. If you manage one Card, you'll land on that cardholder's Transactions tab as soon as you sign in. If you manage more than one Card, select the cardholder whose Card you'd like to close first.
- Click the Account tab on the right side of the screen. If you need help finding it, see How to Navigate to Your Cardholder's Account Tab.
-
Click Permanently close card.
- From the drop-down menu, select the reason you're closing the Card.
- If there's a balance remaining on the Card, enter the mailing address where you'd like the check sent.
- Click the red Close Card button in the pop-up window. Once you click this button, the Card is permanently closed.
Please be aware
- Closing is permanent. A closed Card can't be used again. If the cardholder would like to use a Card again in the future, you'll need to order a new one. See How to order your Visa® Prepaid Card. If you'd like to ask about reopening a Card that was closed, please contact our Customer Support team.
- The Card stops working everywhere. A closed Card also stops working in Apple Wallet and Google Wallet, and any recurring payments or subscriptions set up on the Card will be declined. Let the cardholder know, and update any merchants that charge the Card regularly.
- Reports stay available. You can still find reports for a closed Card. If you manage multiple Cards, uncheck Hide Closed Cards on the All Clients page to find the cardholder. See Navigating the All Clients Page.
If you have any questions about closing a Card, or if you'd like to ask about reopening a Card that was closed, please don't hesitate to contact our Customer Support team.
